| There is already a thread in the French section about cinema, but I can't talk well in French about films. Basically: has anyone seen any excellent (or very bad) films recently that they'd like to talk about? Last night, I watched Garden State, the directorial debut of Zach Braff. An odd film, but a good film (excellent is another matter, and you'll spend some time afterwards thinking about whether it was or not). The film didn't quite know what it wanted to be, I thought, and this benefited the film as well as hindered it. There's some excellent little surreal moments and touches, though, that will make you smile throughout the (generally) melancholy storyline. (I can see certain people not liking it--in the same way some people don't "get" films like Lost in Translation.)

| i don't go to the movies all that much... but i see films on DVD
it's not a bad way of seeing movies since you get to check and see things again if you want to ... but you see it after everyone else and usualy people have forgotten about the movie...

| I don't often go to the cinema either. I think maybe I've been about six times in my entire life! But you can talk about films you've seen anywhere--in the cinema, on DVD &c. | |

| I saw Garden State recently as well. I liked it I think. I'm still trying to decide about that one. Like seraphestoc said, it did have its moments, but there were a few times when it seemed a little slow and I had to force myself to keep watching.
The last movie I actually saw at the cinema was The 40 Year Old Virgin and I thought it was hilarious.

I think the last film I saw at the cinema was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I had free tickets to a premier! The problem is, the cost of going to the cinema quickly adds up: £6 for a ticket each, £3 for the bus fare each...

| Well I went to 2 movies lately... First one was The Island, which is quite catchy if you ask me... Good sound effects, the story-line isn't perfect, but it holds everything together... And I kinda like the blond girl :p
The second one, was Chakushin ari, aka One Missed Call, some Japanese horror movie... Not really the kind of movies I use to watch, but... Yeah well, the other movies didn't look interesting... Not such a good movie, just some thing you gotta see if you wanna hold your gf in your arms during some scenes...

| I love Lost in Translation, but I don't like Garden State. It seems like it's trying too hard--like it wants to be a hip, Lost in Translation type of film, but lacks the same attention to detail, fine writing, and high level of performances. It doesn't hold together for me. | |

I've heard that's a very good but disturbing movie in the way that the characters' views are very askewed to the way most people perceive things. Like they're living in a separate world. But I'm just going by what my friend told me. How would you describe it?
